Vocal Science and Vocal Art, Part One: In Search of Common Ground

by Helding, Lynn
The author provides a comprehensive, historical review of contributions to voice science and pedagogy. The article explores the relationship between science and art through its history, its current state, and the new field of cognitive science to which voice pedagogy could look for a rapprochement between these two modes of understanding and the teaching of singing.

Editor's Review
This article provides an excellent historical perspective for the understanding of what some have considered to be a divide between the scientific/mechanistic versus the artistic/intuitive approaches to vocal pedagogy. Helding's approach to reconciliation of the two provided the impetus for her regular column in the Journal of Singing "Mindful Voice" in which she explores what the cognitive sciences can offer vocal pedagogy. Some of her other articles can be found in the Brain and Learning category in Vocapedia.
