Vowels are synthesized using vocal tract solid models, demonstrating functions of the vocal tract and vocal cords waves. The models were shaped based on 3D MRI and stereolithography (Rapid Prototyping), and glottal waves are generated using Rosenberg-Klatt waveform with 1/f fluctuation of its cycle. Male and female models are used to produce vowels. Voice qualities are well enough to identify the persons whom MR images were taken from.

    This very brief video provides a clear demonstration of how the vocal tract filters the sound source spectrum to create vowels, and recognizable human voice quality. Minimal explanation is given, but the demonstration is clear. Unfortunately, the solid models of the vocal tract can't be seen well enough to delineate the differences in vocal tract shape between the vowels. Still, this can be a useful adjunct to articles on source-tract interaction. Well worth the two minutes!
