Boston University’s College of Fine Arts School of Music invites applications for the position of Assistant Professor of Choral Conducting (non-tenure-track) with an anticipated start date of July 1, 2023. The successful candidate will teach in the School’s MM and DMA Conducting Programs while assuming direction of choral ensembles and contributing to the needs of the orchestral conducting program. Applicants should possess a strong background in choral conducting, a knowledge of the choral canon, a passion for developing new ways of presenting the choral arts, and a commitment to presenting emergent styles, techniques, and repertoire. The candidate should also possess a collaborative spirit and a proven ability to teach beginning and advanced conducting courses. Qualifications include significant professional experience in conducting, presenting, and teaching. Preferred qualifications include knowledge of repertoire and styles of choral music traditions (including classical, contemporary, and symphonic); knowledge of classical vocal chamber repertoire; and conducting skills.

Prior teaching experience is desirable. • Candidates will possess a willingness to work with a collaborative spirit within a team of faculty with varied approaches and proven professional abilities to conduct both choral and orchestra ensembles.
• Significant experience in teaching conducting at both graduate and undergraduate levels.
• Advanced understanding of classic voice production and fluency in French, German, Italian, and/or English diction.
• Successful candidates must have a comprehensive knowledge of repertoire and styles of a variety of global choral traditions and demonstrate proficiency in piano and choral conducting. Additional competencies include a commitment to contributing to orchestral conducting needs.
• Applicants must hold a terminal degree and commit to teaching in the Choral Conducting MM, and DMA programs.
• Duties to include:
Conducting SoM choral ensembles; teaching choral studies classes as needed; overseeing and advising choral and orchestral conducting students; overseeing all aspects of the choral program, interacting with the large ensembles staff, and as recruiting and advisory head, working with the Admissions Office toward recruitment for the Conducting programs.

• Evidence of teaching and mentoring emerging artists in the classroom, on the podium, and in the field.

• A commitment to shared governance through service in the School of Music and College of Fine Arts. The successful candidate will chair the small conducting department that oversees graduate conducting students.
